Current issues

Village Budget:  The village is again in the process of putting together our budget for the next fiscal year (2012-2013).  A copy of the tentative budget is posted (Excel spreadsheet).  For insight into the some of the budget issues that Potsdam faces, see the benchmarking studies I have been working on.  This is your budget, so please feel free to contact me with comments.  A public hearing on the budget will be held on April 16, at 6:30 in the Civic Center board room.

Annexation math:  Recently several letters to the editor have referenced how annexation has been shown mathematically to benefit both the town and the village.  Here are several examples of that math, using the proposed apartment complex as a specific case.  I have also added some additional background information.

Effect on net revenue to the community

Loss in property tax revenue to the town, and effect on a taxpayer

Personal note on fairness to existing businesses

Additional considerations

Police department cost study: The Board of Trustees, at my urging, has initiated a study with the goal of moderating the short term and long term cost of the Village police force.  This is in no way intended to be a criticism of our force.  Rather, it is a sober recognition of a growing financial problem in the village, one that I think we would do better to face now rather than later.  Here are some of the numbers and other comments.
