Is it fair to existing businesses? This is my personal opinion on this question. Existing businesses within the village get municipal water and sewer service, and pay full village taxes to be able to get this service. There are many rental properties within the village--for example, Meadow East Apartments, Swan Landing Apartments, North Country Manor Apartments, and many smaller rental businesses--which apparently can be successful even though paying full village taxes. When the Town Council claims that a rental business can not succeed if they have to pay village taxes, the evidence does not appear to support this claim. Therefore, I do not think it is legitimate for the Town Council to try to scare people with the insinuation that the new apartment developer will go away if they have to pay village taxes. More importantly, when the Town Council asks the village to provide w/s service to the new apartment development, without annexation, and therefore without the burden of full village taxes, they are asking the village to subsidize a competitive rental business. I do not know of any local business person who objects to competition...if the playing field is level. Every village business person I know is willing to compete if it is a fair competition. But the Town Council's request is asking the village board to do something that will tilt the playing field against existing businesses. In the case of the proposed apartment development, the Town Council is proposing to trade an additional income to the town of $15,000 against disadvantaging many existing town/village businesses, many of which have paid town and village taxes for many years. To me this is simply not fair, and I can not understand the Town Council's position. Such an approach does not seem, to me, to be in the overall best interest of our community. Return to main page |
